The GR54

The grand tour of the Écrins massif

The GR54, or Tour de l'Oisans et des Écrins, is one of the most beautiful and demanding long-distance trails in the Alps. In a 176-kilometre loop of a dozen or so stages, it makes a full circuit of the Écrins massif, crossing a succession of passes over 2,000 metres, through alpine pastures, high-altitude lakes, glaciers and authentic villages.

Renowned for its elevation gain — close to 12,000 metres of climbing in total — the GR54 draws seasoned hikers, French and very much international too: Dutch, German and British walkers come every summer to take it on. It's a ten- to fourteen-day adventure, where every stage is earned and where the evening's lodging matters as much as the scenery.

And that's where we come in: La Garde-en-Oisans sits 300 metres from the GR54 route. Our hamlet of La Garde-en-Oisans is a natural stopping point on the grand tour — somewhere to set down your pack, wash away the fatigue, and set off again the next day with fresh legs.

Stopping with us

The stopover that changes everything

On a tour this demanding, the quality of the stopover makes all the difference. Here's why GR54 hikers stop with us.

The hammam after the hike

The one thing you won't find anywhere else on the route: a private hammam to loosen tired muscles after a big stage. You set off again with fresh legs.

The south-facing terrace

South-facing, with a view over the valley 50 m away: the perfect spot to stretch your legs, dry your gear and enjoy a tea in the setting sun.

An easy bail-out

An unplanned break, a change in the weather, a tired knee? Le Bourg-d'Oisans and its transport links are fifteen minutes away — we can easily arrange a stop or resupply.

A proper bed & breakfast

After the refuge and the tent, a comfortable bed, a hot shower and a hearty breakfast served in your room: simple luxury that gets a long-distance hike going again.
