Alpe d'Huez, the 'Island in the Sun', is one of the major international resorts of the French Alps. Its Grandes Rousses ski area covers 250 km of pistes spread over 1,800 m of vertical drop, a glacier open in summer, the legendary Sarenne piste (the longest in Europe), and a world-renowned snowpark.
Good news: you don't need to sleep at the foot of the cable cars to enjoy it. From our two properties in La Garde-en-Oisans, the first Auris-en-Oisans lift — the gateway to the linked Alpe d'Huez ski area — is just three kilometres away. You ski the big area by day, and come home in the evening to somewhere quiet, far from the bustle and the resort prices.
In summer, Alpe d'Huez transforms: summer skiing on the glacier, downhill mountain biking, cycling up the 21 hairpin bends, high-altitude hiking. Just fifteen kilometres away by road from the hamlet, the resort remains an easy gateway to all these playgrounds.
